Top 3 stitches for plush bulky yarn

By

I recently got a ball of Premier Parfait Chunky in Bubblegum from my local Hallmark store to add to a blanket I’m making. I want all of the pieces to have a different stitch, but this yarn is too plush to show the finer stitches that I normally use. I also don’t want to put a ton of work into a complex pattern for a much less noticeable result.

Premier Parfait Chunky is a 6 – Super Bulky (7wpi). It’s a super fluffy corespun (fiber worked around a center thread or strand to make yarn) yarn. I would recommend tying a knot just after any cut ends to make sure none of the ‘fluff’ slides of the core thread. It shouldn’t, so long as you aren’t super rough with the ends, but I do it just to be sure.

All of my samples were worked with US 8 (5 mm) needles although the recommended is US 11 (8 mm) to US 17 (12.75 mm).

Here are my top 3 stitches, with charts, for working with plush yarn to add some fun visual dynamics.

BRAIDED WAVES

CN – cable needle

C6F – cable six forward: sl 3 sts to C), hold in front, k3, k3 from CN

C6B – cable six backwards: sl 3 sts to CN, hold in back, k3, k3 from CN

WICKER PATTERN

(without a cable needle)

kbl – knit through back loop

C2L – cross two left – kbl 2nd st on LN, working behind the 1st st, kbl 1st st, drop both fron LN (click for photo tutorial)
C2R – cross two right – sl 2 together knitwise to RN, slip individual sts knitwise to LN, purl 2 (click for photo tutorial)

I would also recommend putting a stitch marker into the front side after you have worked two rows.

Cast on in groups of 2 + 2.

Row 1 (rs): k1, *C2L; repeat from * till last st, k1.

Row 2 (ws): p2, *C2R; repeat from * till last 2 sts, p2.

TWO COLOR LATTICE

This pattern involves two colors and I’m going to use two different sizes of yarn as well. The bubblegum yarn is a 7 wpi (super bulky) and my other color is a 12 wpi (fingering) and is a single ply of a 3 ply yarn I got at a yard sale years ago, I call it opera pink.

sl 1 pyb – slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in back

sl 1 pyf – slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in front

yb – yarn back

yf – yarn forward

pbf- purl into the back and front of the next stitch to increase

NOTES:

Don’t over tighten the yarn in front of or behind the slipped stitches. After working each knit st with color A, pull the slipped strand out a bit to loosen it or your working yarn to tighten.

For the smaller yarn I will be casting on double and working two stitches as 1, this makes the final row denser. For casting off the 2nd to last row I will be doing pfb, and for the last I bound off in pairs.

It is also important to make sure that your long floating stitches are on the correct side of your work.
