What makes DMC so special? or, in essence, why did DMC out of all of the other companies out there make it to the present day?
Yes, J&P and Coats & Clark have stuck around and are pretty common in my house but they are just mixed in with all of the other spools of thread, if anything Gutterman is the only one that I might refer to by brand name but that is more because the spool has a distinct shape compared to the others, so the brand info helps find it faster.
Maybe I'm biased, but if I have embroidery floss it's DMC, with almost no exception1
In my opinion, it's the color standardization. Even back in the 1910's DMC focused on colorfast dyes and consistently colored dyes. It's on the brand logo all the way back in 1908.
Modernized or adapted patterns default to DMC colors and some cheap embroidery kits I've gotten have attempted to copy them as well.
My hoard started with my moms collection from the 80's, and most of the colors today are almost the same as they were then. Some color variation over time, even with the same formula is to be expected although the change is and would be difficult to notice if you weren't looking for it.
They've taken a standardized color system and have kept to it for over 100 years.
The only one of these I’m familiar with today is the Perle Cotton and by the looks of it the sizes are still the exact same as well. Although from the description the Floss Embroidery Cotton may be simmilar to Machine Broder, which comes in size 25 as well, but that is just a guess. The stranded cotton in size 25 is the same as todays 6-strand embroidery floss.
