Understanding Victorian Knitting Instructions: terminology

One of my recent new challenges has been working with open source (pre 1925) patterns. This has allowed me to discover new patterns that I haven’t seen before, but used to be very common. However the needle size, yarn size, and even the terminology used are different than today.

Terminology

Stitches:

Make 1: yarn over
Plain (stitch): pl : knit
Take In: knit 2 together
Narrow: n: knit 2 together
Back (Stitch): purl
Raise Stitch: make one using the bar between stitches
Knit Crossed: knit in the back loop
Throw Over: th o or o: yarn over
Seam: purl
Double Knitting: a way to make a double sided garment, see The Art Of Knitting(page 9)
Patent Knitting: brioche knitting

Tools:

Wire: Knitting needle
Pins, Knitting pins: Knitting needle

Garments:

Anti-Macassars: a small work placed over the back and or arms of chairs,either as decoration or to protect the original fabric of the chair
D'Oyleys: doilies, an ornamental mat
Counterpane: a bedspread or decorative bed cover
